At the top of the building, engraved into the stone is "ESTABLISHED BY/ PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ IN THE THIRD YEAR/ IN THE MAYORALITY OF/ JOHN POTTER ESQ/ MDCCCII". (bc) is the coat of arms for Manchester. The Manchester Free Library was opened in Campfield in 1852 by Charles Dickens.
