Summary
A woman looking towards the viewer, her body turned to the right. Her hands are clasped together. Around each wrist is a manacle, with a long chain, with reaches the floor, at the end of each chain is a large, heavy looking steel ball. The woman is wearing a sash over her right shoulder, which reads "VOTES FOR WOMEN".

St Christabel Unknown English artist Hand-coloured print 'Deeds not Words' became the cry of the militant Suffragette movement, founded in Manchester by the Pankhursts. 'Saint' Christabel Pankhurst is shown in chains, symbolic of her periods of imprisonment for protesting the Suffragette cause. The smashed window behind her refers to the shop window smashing that won the movement much press attention. The purple, green and white sash has the Suffragette slogan, "Votes for Women". Here, Christabel is saviour of the cause. Manchester City Galleries Local History Collection
