Market Day, 1953

Hal Yates 1907 - 1979

Summary

A market scene on a sunny day. In the foreground, on a vivid yellow ground is a young boy or girl in yellow shorts riding a green bicycle, looking towards the viewer. There is also a girl in a yellow skirt, green jacket and red sash walking away from the picture plane towards the market. To the left are two ladies in orange and green dresses, pushing a black hooded pram. In the middle ground, there is a crowd of people around approximately four market stalls. The stalls are covered in canopies of yellow, brown and blue. The background becomes more hastily and expressively painted, with blocks of colour suggesting activity further away. Behind the market scene, there is a large modern building and the painting is crowned by a bright blue sky.
