La Pasionaria (the Passionflower) was a Spanish Republican heroine of the Spanish Civil War and a Communist politician of Basque origin, known for the slogan 'Thou shall not pass' during the Battle for Madrid in November 1936. She was exiled from Spain to Moscow at the end of the civil war.

La Pasionaria speaks at a meeting in the Hall of Columns at the Dom Sovietov, Moscow 1941 La Pasionaria (The Passion Flower) was the nom-de-plume, later the nom-de-guerre, of Dolores Ibárruri, one of the leaders of the Spanish Communist Party. She was famous for her rallying cry, ‘No Pasarán!’ (‘They shall not pass!’). She exhorted women to fight the fascist forces with knives and boiling oil. When the fascist General Franco declared victory in Spain in 1939, La Pasionaria escaped to Moscow. She returned to Spain in 1977, 18 months after Franco’s death.
