Portrait of a young man

Bronzino

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Bronzino. The page has an arched shape at the top, framing the head of a young man wearing a cap who is looking towards the right. The man is in a seated position, and is wearing a tunic belted at the waist. He is holding an object, possibly some rolled paper, in his right hand; his left hand, with a ring on the little finger, rests on his knee. The drawing stops just below the man's knees. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "9. BRONZINO (b. 1503; d. 1572) PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, K.G., Chatsworth. From the Flinck Collection. Black chalk, arched at top. 26.4 x 18.7 cm. (10 3/8 x 7 3/8 in.). Drawings by Bronzino are of considerable rarity. The fine study, here illustrated, for the portrait alternatively known as that of a 'Youth with a lute', or of a 'Sculptor', in the Uffizi, stands out as a classical example of his style. Although belonging to the artist's full maturity, it is still pervaded with the youthful influence of Pontormo. A. G. B. R. [Reproduced (as Pontormo) in S. A. Strong, Reproductions of Drawings by Old Masters at Chatsworth, Pl. 16.]"
