Study of a Boy Asleep

Govaert Flinck

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Govaert Flinck. It shows a boy with long curly hair lying against a pillow and turned towards the left. He has a blanket covering him from the waist down, which he holds in place with his left arm. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 25 GOVAERT FLINCK (b. 1615; d. 1660) STUDY OF A BOY ASLEEP Collection of Dr. C. Hofstede de Groot. Pen and bistre and bistre wash. Signed flinck f. 1643. 16.4 x 14.9 cm. (6 7/16 x 5 13/16 in.). There is a drawing in Amsterdam attributed to Rembrandt which seems to be taken from the same child (reproduced, Lippman, second series, 29). It is possible that Flinck, who had been Rembrandt's pupil about 1635-6, was still closely enough in touch with his old master to have been sketching in common. Another, but perhaps less probable solution, is that the Amsterdam drawing is also by Flinck. A. M. H."
