Lapwings
Allan William Seaby 1867 - 1953
Summary
In the centre of this print is a bird seen in profile and facing to the right as it stands on its right leg with its left leg tucked underneath it. Just behind it, to the left, is another bird this time facing forwards towards the viewer. Both birds have white feathers around their faces, on their breasts and at the tips of their tails, the rest of their feathers are depicted as a soft grey-blue. What is striking about the two birds are the long feathers that plume out from their heads. Apart from the long blades of grass seen on the left hand side and around the feet of the birds and in the bottom right hand corner there are no other background details. The background is simply a colour wash that starts with blue at the top and gradually shifts to a soft green tone at the base.
