A Winter Evening
Summary
A stand of tall trees directs our gaze to the sunset that forms a dramatic backdrop to this winter scene. The fields are covered in snow and farm buildings are just visible in the dim light. The only action in this frozen landscape is provided by two figures collecting firewood as night falls. Carl Philip Weber was born in Darmstadt, the son of a musician who emigrated with his family to Philadelphia in 1853. Carl returned to Germany for his artistic training, studying in Nuremburg, Darmstadt and Munich. He returned to Philadelphia in 1874, soon after this painting was made, where he achieved an international reputation for his landscape paintings.
