Seated Woman
Summary
The subject of this print, a seated woman, is almost overshadowed by the distinctive mode in which it is represented. Drawn in a bold, sketchy manner the woman is portrayed using abstracted shapes in a cubist style. This is particularly apparent in the woman’s face where the nose is seen in profile but the eyes are seen face on. She is shown sitting cross-legged on a highly patterned chair facing towards the viewer. The woman is partially nude as her torso is completely bare revealing her breasts. What is also striking about the print is the line-work as it is boldly and freely drawn, varying from strong outlines to dense patches such as in the top left next to the woman’s face and the bottom right hand corner. Although the palette is quite limited it uses strong, vibrant colours like red, blue and green, which stand out against the white of the paper.
