The Wayfarer

Alphonse Legros 1837 - 1911

Summary

The only figure in this composition is the elderly, bearded man positioned just right of centre in the foreground. His age is evident in his hunched posture, which is emphasised by the large coat he has draped over his shoulders, and the walking stick he uses to walk. As he is wearing a hat much of his face is in shadow but he appears to be looking down at the floor as he walks forwards. The composition then seems to be split into two halves, one either side of him. To his right, behind him, the path he is following winds back into the distance and the sky is quite clear and bright. The left-hand side, in contrast to this, is very shadowed with a slight hill acting as a bank by the pathway. On the bank there are two trees and thick bushes growing which make the left-hand side appear even more dark and gloomy, an effect that is created by the artist’s use of sketchy cross-hatching. The artist's signature is in the bottom right-hand corner.
