Winter: Back of the Mill

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

The river, which runs through the snowy scene from the lower left hand corner, curving to the right, and disappearing from view just off middle centre, allows the artist to cleverly depict the reflections of the surrounding landscape in the water. The trees, which line the left hand side of the river, and the buildings and warehouses, which line the right hand side, can all be seen reflected in the water. The buildings, like the river, follow a curve into the middle centre of the composition and there geometric shape serves as a contrast to the curves and complex lines of the trees to the right. On the left hand side of the river in the centre of the landscape there are two figures, a man and a woman holding hands, and they seem like dark silhouettes against the white of the snow. Further in the distance to the left is a horse and cart moving away from the buildings out of the frame, and in the far distance on the horizon line is a dense woods.
