Summary

This autumnal landscape shows a farmer with a plough drawn by two horses ploughing a field in the foreground of the composition. At the corner of the field next to the large tree in the middle right is a signpost indicating a crossroads. The vertical paths lead out of the frame to the centre of the horizon and out of the lower left hand corner whilst the horizontal paths lead over the hills to the left and along the boundary of the field being ploughed to the right. Just behind the field in the middle ground of the composition are four large haybales which act as a focal point to the scene. Beside them to the right is also a wooden cart that has been left there while it is not being used. There are three trees along the border of the field being ploughed, none of which have leaves, but the majority of the trees can be seen on the horizon line on the left and right hand side. This allows for there to be a gap between the trees in the centre where the eye can follow the line of the hill and the path into the distance.
