Via Crucis

Georges Rouault 1871 - 1958

Summary

This landscape scene is rendered using rich, bright colours from blue to red to yellow, and simplified forms outlined in thick black outlines. In the centre of the composition is a walkway becoming narrower as it stretches back towards the domed building in the centre distance which is also red-toned. Standing at the foot of this walkway, in the foreground, are three figures. One of the figures is a man with dark hair and wearing a red robe whilst the other two figures are shorter and dressed in yellow-toned robes with yellow head coverings. The taller man has his back to the viewer but turns his head to the left towards the other two figures one of which faces forwards and looks back at him whilst the other, furthest to the left, is also turned away from the viewer. The rest of the background is divided into three sections, the topmost section being the sky which is blue at the top and more yellow at the horizon, whilst the other sections correspond with the length of the walkway and are of a more blue-green hue.
